The New York Mets were contenders in 2024 and are still pursuing Soto this offseason. Acquiring him would immediately enhance their offense and position them as division favorites, rather than just contenders for a Wild Card spot.
The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to focus on immediate success by acquiring superstars, including Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and now Blake Snell, making them consistent World Series contenders for the foreseeable future.
Philadelphia boasts the best starting rotation among the four teams, possibly the best in the sport with their top four starters. While adding Burnes or Fried isn't as crucial as improving the offense, it would significantly reduce the need for offensive upgrades if their rotation maintains an ERA in the low 3.00s with four aces.
The team has repeatedly expressed a desire to enhance their outfield, though whether this will happen remains uncertain. Trading Castellanos and bringing in Teoscar Hernandez or Santander would significantly boost their already strong offense and improve their defense.
Castellanos recorded -8 Outs Above Average in right field in 2024, while Hernandez posted -1 and Santander -2. Although none are "good," either Hernandez or Santander would be an improvement, allowing Brandon Marsh to remain in left field and Johan Rojas in center field, where both excel defensively.
Offensively, Castellanos achieved a 742 OPS with a 106 OPS+ in 2024. Santander recorded an .814 OPS with a 134 OPS+, and Hernandez posted an .840 OPS with a 137 OPS+. Both outperformed Castellanos while playing primarily in less hitter-friendly parks than Citizens Bank Park.
The organization faces a pivotal decision this winter, which could either benefit or harm their future. However, the Phillies must make a significant move in free agency this offseason if they plan to remain contenders in the years ahead.
Expectations were high for the Philadelphia Phillies as they entered this offseason, with many anticipating the team to be major contenders in the Juan Soto race. However, a recent report from Matt Gelb dashed those hopes, making the outlook for this winter much more uncertain than initially thought.
The Phillies have shown a willingness to trade third baseman Alec Bohm and right fielder Nick Castellanos, but negotiations haven't progressed significantly. Even if trades occur before Spring Training, it's unlikely the team will acquire players capable of making a significant impact by 2025.
The top of the free agency class remains strong, featuring two top pitchers, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, and two powerful outfielders, Teoscar Hernandez and Anthony Santander. If Philadelphia aims to remain competitive in 2025 and beyond, as they have for the past three years, they must secure one of these four players.
The Atlanta Braves' streak of winning the National League East ended in 2024 due to the Phillies, but they are not to be underestimated. They faced more injuries this year than most teams encounter over several seasons, along with Matt Olson experiencing one of his worst seasons. They are expected to return to form in 2025.

With Soto signing to division rival Mets, the Phillies will be pressed to make a big move
December 11, 2024
After the Phillies lost to the Mets in the NLDS, much of the fan base said it was "Soto or Bust" time, but now, with Soto back within their division as a Met, the team will need to make some moves to maintain their hold over the division.
