However, Bregman is not currently worth the deal Rosenthal projects, even though he may have been at one point.

From his Major League debut in 2016 through 2019, the veteran hit .286/.384/.527 with 99 home runs, 320 RBI, and a 144 OPS+. Since the start of the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he has hit .261/.350/.445 with 92 home runs, 343 RBI, and a 122 OPS+.

That's a decline of .116 in the OPS category.

Defensively, Bregman has been one of the better fielders at third base throughout his career, recording 28 Outs Above Average at the position according to Baseball Savant and winning his first career Gold Glove award this season with a total of six in that same metric.

The deal Rosenthal projects for Bregman would have an AAV of $31.8 million per year for over the next decade.

This would significantly constrain the Phillies for the rest of the winter with their already high payroll, likely preventing them from making any other major upgrades.

While Bregman might be a substantial improvement over Bohm, slightly offensively and significantly defensively, Philadelphia might be better off keeping their current player and investing elsewhere in free agency.

The Philadelphia Phillies have expressed their intention to "shake things up" this offseason, leading to rumors about third baseman Alec Bohm being on the trade block.

This follows the best full season of his young career, which could yield the highest return for the hitter, while certainly causing a stir in the clubhouse and lineup.

If Bohm were to be traded, it would create a vacancy on the left side of the infield at a crucial position, both offensively and defensively.

The club might have an interest in a veteran free agent who could fit right in.

Alex Bregman has entered free agency for the first time in his career after spending his initial nine seasons in the Majors with the Houston Astros.

The third baseman has won two World Series titles with the team, been named to two All-Star teams, won a Silver Slugger, a Gold Glove, and was the American League MVP runner-up in 2019.

A recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has brought some concerning news.

While the initial contract projection for the 30-year-old was a seven-year, $189 million deal, the veteran and his agent, Scott Boras, might be seeking a deal closer to the 11-year, $350 million extension that Manny Machado signed with the San Diego Padres before the 2023 season.

Boras is known for securing the most lucrative deals for his clients, even if it means they don't sign with a team until after baseball activities have resumed, as was the case with Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery last year.
