With starting pitching being an area the Phillies are eager to strengthen, given the uncertainties surrounding their fifth rotation spot due to Taijaun Walker's declining performance and a lack of internal replacements, they are reportedly eyeing another option.
"Left-handed starter Patrick Sandoval, 28, who underwent Tommy John surgery midway through last season, is attracting interest from the Philadelphia Phillies and other teams, with the plan for him to rehab through 2025 and be ready for 2026. He is considered an intriguing low-cost option as a mid-rotation lefty with an effective changeup," Sports Illustrated's MLB insider Tom Verducci reported.
This could be a smart long-term strategy, but it won't benefit Philadelphia in the upcoming season if that's the expected recovery timeline.
Patrick Sandoval had a strong two-year period from 2021-22.
In 44 appearances and 41 starts, the left-hander recorded a 3.17 ERA over 235 2/3 innings with 245 strikeouts and 96 walks.
However, over the past two seasons, his ERA rose above 4.00, making his future performance difficult to predict post-Tommy John surgery.
Again, this could be a strategic move for the Phillies if they can secure Sandoval on a cost-effective contract, allowing them to integrate him into their rotation later, but it wouldn't help them win a World Series in 2025.
Philadelphia needs to make a significant move to enhance the roster for the upcoming season.
The Philadelphia Phillies have not experienced the offseason they anticipated.
Expected to be among the most proactive teams in the trade and free agency markets, their only significant action has been to acquire reliever Jordan Romano, whose 2024 season was affected by injury.
While the bullpen is a clear necessity for the Phillies, their efforts pale in comparison to other contending teams that have made impactful moves to address evident weaknesses exposed during the latter half of the season and playoffs.
A notable move would have been trading for Garrett Crochet.
The promising left-handed pitcher was a target for Philadelphia at the trade deadline before negotiations fell through.
Now, he is no longer available as the Boston Red Sox completed a major deal to acquire him.
