Schwellenbach meanwhile had not allowed a run this season through three starts until Kyle Schwarber tagged him for his sixth home run of the season, tying the game at 1-1 in the third inning.

Schwarber has now safely reached base at least once in every game the Phillies have played so far this season and leads the National League in home runs with 6 in 12 games.

But that was the only run the Phillies would score until the 11th, when Rojas worked a six pitch walk with the bases loaded following an intentional walk to J.T. Realmuto and a seven pitch walk to Bryson Stott that moved the ghost runner to third with two outs. Five Braves relievers combined to throw five hitless innings with five strikeouts with the Phillies last hit coming before the rain delay in the sixth. Realmuto singled with one out off of Schwellenbach before Alec Bohm grounded into an inning ending double play on the first pitch he saw.

Tomorrow’s matchup

The Phillies will open a three game set with the St. Louis Cardinals on the road Friday at 8:15. Aaron Nola (0-2, 6.25 ERA) will take the mound against Andre Pallante (1-0, 3.86 ERA).

A pitchers duel between Jesús Luzardo and Spencer Schwellenbach was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay before Marcell Ozuna launched a two-run, walk off home run against Joe Ross in the 11th inning to hand the Phillies their first series loss of the season.

Ross entered in the 11th with the Phillies leading 2-1, as they had scored in the top half of the inning thanks to a Johan Rojas walk with the bases loaded and two outs. But Ross allowed a double to Austin Riley that immediately scored the ghost runner and tied the game before allowing the home run to Ozuna to end it. The Phillies offense did not score in the 10th despite having the top of the order at the plate. On the night, the Phillies went 0-10 with RISP and stranded 13 men on base.

Luzardo started strong with a strikeout of Ozzie Albies in the first, but then Austin Riley walked and Marcell Ozuna doubled to put two in scoring position with one out. Luzardo was able to get Matt Olson to groundout, but the run came across to sore and gave the Braves an early lead.

However, that was the only run Luzardo would allow on the night, as he went on to finish six innings while allowing 6 hits and a walk with 6 strikeouts. He helped himself with some steeling defense, including a throw to second on a fielder’s choice to nab Bryan De La Cruz who strayed too far after a double in the second.

The biggest danger Luzardo ran into came in the third which started with a single by Albies. That however was quickly erased after Luzardo picked him off first base, but Riley and Ozuna followed with a pair of singles to put two on with one out. Luzardo then became locked into a 14 pitch battle with Olson that included 9 foul balls. He finally won the battle and induced an inning ending double play, but it looked like his pitch count was wrecked as it now sat at 60 pitches through 3 innings. But an eight pitch fifth inning helped remedy that as Luzardo retired 8 in a row to end his night.
