This indicates a potential opportunity for the 25-year-old to assume a more prominent backup role and see increased playing time in Realmuto's absence.

Marchan boasts a career slash line of .279/.33/.477 with an OPS+ of 120 over his 40 Major League games, but he only appeared in 17 games this past season, marking his return to the Major Leagues since 2021, primarily due to injuries.

As Dombrowski mentioned, injuries have been the primary reason for Marchan's limited appearances.

He was sidelined for 60 days in 2022 due to a hamstring injury and then in 2023 after fracturing the hamate bone in his right hand.

While the Phillies are not ruling out the possibility of retaining Stubbs as their backup catcher, his .207/.296/.262 slash line and OPS+ of 59 during extended playing time this year may not meet the team's standards when Realmuto requires rest.

Considering Marchan's injury history and the need for a reliable backup, Dombrowski is exploring all possibilities for this position.

"However, I cannot guarantee them the role. We need to remain open-minded as we evaluate this situation during the offseason," he added.

They might consider turning to external options in free agency.

Regardless, Stubbs's tenure in Philadelphia could be nearing its conclusion this offseason.

As free agency commences and the offseason kicks off, the Philadelphia Phillies face numerous questions about their strategy to contend for a World Series title in 2025 and beyond.

If they don't get innovative, a significant portion of last year's roster may return due to the contractual obligations of most players.

The Phillies have deliberated potential changes for the upcoming season, particularly regarding their fifth rotation spot, which could see top prospect Andrew Painter at some stage, but they have also recognized the need to reduce J.T. Realmuto's workload as a catcher.

However, for this adjustment to occur, Philadelphia requires a dependable backup who can fill in without a significant drop in performance compared to Realmuto.

Their internal choices include former top prospect Rafael Marchan and fan favorite Garrett Stubbs, but based on comments from president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, it appears they might be moving on from the latter.

"We have a high regard for Marchan. He is a skilled catcher who has also shown promise in offense ... Despite his injury setbacks, he has performed admirably when given the opportunity. Therefore, we have capable internal options," stated the future Hall of Fame executive as reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
