THE JAWN STORE

It stayed that way even though Suarez was teetering for a while. He eventually settled and held the Mets to the two runs before exiting after five innings of work. Jose Ruiz would relieve him and create quite the pickle in the sixth, but a nice play on a comebacker with two on would preserve the tie for the moment.

In the seventh, the team turned to Kerkering out of the bullpen, who would struggle. He walked Starling Marte to start the frame before striking out Mark Vientos for the first out. Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch to put two men on when Brandon Nimmo singled to bring home Marte and send Alonso to third. After a steal of second, the Mets had two men in scoring position with one out for Alvarez. Hitting a ball that was kissed by the BABIP gods, Alvaraez dunked a ball in between Weston Wilson and Johan Rojas for a two run double that sealed the game for the Mets.

The Phillies would get one in the eighth on a Cal Stevenson ground out, but Edwin Diaz was summoned into a game with two out and men on first and second to face Schwarber, who promptly struck out to end the threat. An insurance run for the Mets in their half of the eighth ended what should have been a celebration for the Phillies, instead allowing the Mets to keep their division hopes on life support.

Now, ESPN won’t have to air a hangover game tomorrow night by the Phillies...

Somewhere, an ESPN executive is smiling.

Facing the possibility of clinching the NL East division for the first time in a long time, the Phillies began the game as hot as could be, but another round of questions about Ranger Suarez were raised, Orion Kerkering struggled with the control he’s had in spades the past few weeks and the team had to put the bubbly back on the shelf for another night.

Kyle Schwarber tried to put the team on his back in the first inning, connecting on the second pitch delivered by Sean Manaea for a solo home run and the lead.

Suarez being on the mound for the Phillies, something of a shell of his early season self right now, he didn’t exactly inspire confidence when Jose Iglesias doubled to start the Mets’ game, but he settled down and got out of a jam to keep the lead. In the second, the New York offense that has taken a wrecking ball to pitching of late saw Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuna hit solo home runs themselves to take a lead for the Mets after two.

That lead would hold for Manaea and the Mets for the next two innings as the southpaw shut down the Phillies offense for that time. To start the fifth inning, though, he saw Nick Castellanos and missed his spot, watching the Phillies right fielder smack a ball out to tie the game at two.
