Couturier still looking like the good Couturier
He had an assist on the first goal but the first period was another strong one for the Flyers captain. Couturier could’ve had another primary assist on a two-on-one with Joel Farabee but Farabee missed the net (I should trademark that phrase!). But beside that play (and the assist), Couturier seemed to be in the middle of the play and quite engaged. In the third he had a chance to make it 4-1 off a pass from Farabee but was almost in too tight to do much with the puck.
Konecny again nailed (and again)
Travis Konecny got clocked by an elbow against Sam Benett Thursday night and Saturday he met Nikita Zadorov who pummeled him. Konecny was obviously slow to get up as he gives up some height and some weight to him but managed to stay in the game. During the same shift the Flyers got an insurance goal when Cam York made up for the two minors by beating Swayman. Konecny got a secondary assist on the goal.
Early in the third Konecny was in no man’s land in the slot and tried to get between two Bruins. He got squeezed and got hit again, losing his helmet and taking his time getting to the bench. On the interference penalty he took in the third, he left the game whether to get checked out or due to a spotter and concussion protocol. Bobby Brink served the penalty in his absence and Konecny did not return. Hopefully just precautionary but we’ll know more either Sunday or early next week.
The lines are now the lines
The line juggling that was the norm to start the season has waned completely. And most of those lines are finding some kind of rhythm or chemistry. The Noah Cates line with Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink had a strong first period but overall most of the lines settled in nicely, filling up the neutral zone and not letting Boston freewheel through the middle of the ice.
After two periods the Flyers were man-handling the Bruins in chances for (21-12 five-on-five and 5-1 in high danger chances for) despite tied in shots on goal. This included a 13-5 chances for advantage in the second, a period the Flyers are starting to look a bit better in lately. Granted when the Flyers were down a forward in the third some of the lines and combinations were juggled, particularly on the penalty kill.
Will the real Kolosov please stand up?
Kolosov kept the Flyers ahead in the second with some great saves after the Bruins cut Philadephia’s lead in half. Outshot 17-9 28 minutes into the game, the goalie looked the polar opposite of the Florida game. He also made a few timely stops late in the second. We’re still not sure what to expect from Kolosov game in and game out, but any time one of your two, er, backups can stop the puck it’s a good game. Although he didn’t come up big in the clutch, it was a better performance on this afternoon than his stint Thursday night.
On the 37th anniversary of Ron Hextall scoring an empty-net goal against the Bruins, the Flyers lost a two-goal lead, got a point in regulation, possibly lost Travis Konecny, and lost the game 4-3 in overtime.
The basics
First period: 7:23- Matvei Michkov (Sean Couturier, Emil Andrae) (PPG), 18:24- Matvei Michkov (Travis Sanheim)
Second period: 5:26- Trent Frederic (Mason Lohrei, Mogan Geekie) (PPG), 15:29- Cam York (Travis Sanheim, Travis Konecny)
Third period: 5:18- Trent Frederic (Charlie Coyle, Mark Kastelic), 14:38- Brad Marchand (Justin Brazeau)
Overtime: 2:49- Pavel Zacha (David Pastrnak)
SOG: 26 (PHI) – 31 (BOS)
Some takeaways
Michkov is MMgood
Matvei Michkov got his second goal in the first period, becoming the third teenaged Flyer in franchise history to have three consecutive multi-point games (the others being Eric Lindros and the late Peter Zezel). Michkov potted number two on a nifty pass from Travis Sanheim for a rather easy tap-in.
The Mad Russian also became the first rookie this year to hit the 10-goal mark. And after one period had a seven-point lead over Lane Hutson, the next top rookie point-getter. He also made a fantastic seeing-eye pass to Morgan Frost in the second on a rush that Frost couldn’t bury. But I know, I know, Habs fans, if only Michkov was only half the player Ivan Demidov is going to be….
PK & PP redemption
The Flyers nosedived Thursday night in the league in terms of penalty killing, sitting in eleventh spot overall heading into Saturday’s game. And the Flyers continued shooting themselves in the foot with six minors beginning with a too many men on the ice penalty less than two minutes in (their fifth of the season). They killed it, but not before Brad Marchand batted a puck in the air off the post as Aleksei Kolosov was looking for the rebound. Marchand was robbed on the Bruins’ subsequent power play when Kolosov stuck out his pad to deny him. The third time (this one Cam York’s second minor of the game on a nothing neutral zone play) was the charm for Boston as a rebound found its way in after Kolosov made a great highlight reel stop.
The Flyers’ first power play? Well it did not take long for them to take advantage as a shot from the point was blocked. Sean Couturier shoveled the puck over to Michkov who one-timed it by goalie Jeremy Swayman for his tenth of the year.
