Get geared-up for the game

THE JAWN STORE

They couldn’t keep him quiet either of these nights, huh? (Now that headline should make sense...)

The Phillies would come back and get one in the third when Johan Rojas and Bryson Stott hit back-to-back singles, bringing up Trea Turner. Turner continued his hot hitting ways by singling in Rojas and there was something brewing. Alas, that rally was halted when Schwellenbach got Alec Bohm to fly out and Brandon Marsh to strike out.

From there, the game just felt over. Suarez somehow got out of a huge jam in the fourth when he allowed a walk and another double by Ozuna to start the inning. He struck out Sean Murphy and Adam Duvall to get the next two outs before intentionally walking Orlando Arcia to load the bases. No matter, Eli White popped out and the threat was extinguished.

However, in the fifth, Suarez allowed a single to the leadoff hitter, threw a cutter that didn’t cut to Albies and boom - 5-1.

Meanwhile, Spencer Schwellenbach was just excellent. He stifled the Phillies’ offense to almost nothing but singles, allowing a single walk and just making the game a one sided affair.

If you’re looking for one positive thing about the game, the Phillies’ bullpen was very good. Jose Ruiz, Gregory Soto and Seranthony Dominguez threw three combined innings, allowing no runs or hits, one walk and striking out five. That’s the type of thing that, down the road, might be more of an indicator than anything else that happened in the game.

These two teams will look to snatch the rubber game tomorrow afternoon.

What’s that whole thing about when things are going good, one can expect something bad to be just around the corner?

Ranger Suarez was one of the best pitchers in the game through April and May. One could even say THE best pitcher in the game during that time period. Since then, regression has come for him and bitten him in a big way. Tonight in Atlanta, it continued to be in his back pocket during his starts. The command isn’t as sharp as it was, the results are worse than they were.

It’s been a battle.

Facing Spencer Schwellenbach, one might figure that it would be a night for the offense to keep going, for Suarez to get right and for the run to continue. Instead, Schwellenbach channeled his inner Cy Young, Suarez struggled and the game went to the Braves.

In the first inning, things got off to a sour note when Jarred Kelenic roped a double down the right field line, Ozzie Albies singled him in and just like that, the Braves were up 1-0. Suarez struck out Austin Riley and Matt Olson in succession to make it feel like he’d wiggle out of the jam, but then Marcell Ozuna came to the plate.

Now, Ozuna has been very good this year, in consideration for the MVP award if we’re being honest (though a distance behind Ohtani and Harper). He’s been dangerous all year long and tonight was no different. Suarez threw him what looked to be a pretty good pitch and Ozuna just whacked it, carrying, carrying, carrying...
