Nick Castellanos tacked on a second run in the fourth with a home run to left field for his 12th bomb of the year. Castellanos finished the day 2-4 with two extra base hits.
But the Phillies wouldn’t muster much more offense after that off of Cubs starter Jameson Taillon who then retired nine straight after allowing the home run. Taillon finished the day with 7 IP and allowed those 2 runs on just 4 hits with 7 Ks. Philadelphia managed to get two on with one out against former Phillie Drew Smyly in the 8th, but the Cubs lefty recovered to strikeout Turner and Bohm to end the threat.
Tomorrow’s matchup
The Phillies will now travel for three games in Atlanta against the Braves. It will be the first time the teams will square off in Atlanta in 2024 and the first time they’ve played each other since the opening series of the season. Philadelphia will send Aaron Nola (9-4, 3.43) to the mound in game one while Atlanta will counter with Max Fried (7-3, 2.91). First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 on Apple TV+.
On the heels of his first complete game shutout and being named N.L. Pitcher of the month, Cristopher Sánchez had his worst start of his brilliant season in a 10-2 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The lefty allowed 7 runs in just 4 innings pitched including 5 in the fourth inning. Sánchez had allowed just 6 total earned runs in the month of June in 33 IP. Meanwhile, Ian Happ went 4-4 with 6 RBIs and three extra base hits including a pair of three run home runs to avoid a sweep for Chicago.
It started off well
Sánchez retired the Cubs on 8 pitches in the first but ran into trouble in the second. He allowed a walk to Seiya Suzuki and a single to Ian Happ to begin the inning and was struggling to locate his changeup anywhere close to the zone. However, Sánchez was able to recover and strikeout the next three batters to escape the inning unscathed. He followed the escape act with a quick 1-2-3 inning on eight pitches in the third.
But it went downhill
Much like in the second, Sánchez once again allowed a leadoff walk and a single to begin the fourth inning. This time though he was not able to escape, as he allowed a three-run homer to Ian Happ that put the Cubs ahead 3-2 at that point. It was just the second home run Sánchez has allowed this year and the first since April 29th. He had gone 71 innings in between allowing long balls.
Sánchez was finally able to record the first out of the inning on a 108 MPH lineout from Christopher Morel. But he then walked Dansby Swanson and allowed a double to David Bote. Swanson scored on an RBI groundout from Tomas Nido and Bote scored on a single from Nico Hoerner. Patrick Wisdom grounded out to end the inning, but five runs had already come across for Chicago.
Snowball
Sánchez came back out for the fifth but allowed two straight singles before being removed in favor of Seranthony Dominguez. The latter then allowed another three-run homer to Happ that pushed the Cubs lead to 8-2.
The homer closed the book on Sánchez with a final line of 4 IP, 7 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 3 K. Dominguez was then able to retire the next three batters to end the inning. Yunior Marte allowed another run in the 7th on an RBI single to Morel following a walk to Suzuki and a double by Happ. Gregory Soto had his 9-inning scoreless streak snapped in the eighth on a fielder’s choice off of the bat of Cody Bellinger.
Not much better for the offense
The Phillies got on the board in the first after Turner scored from second on a single from Brandon Marsh with two outs. Turner had got on base with a single of his own and then stole second on his first attempt at stealing since returning from his hamstring injury.

Phillies lefty Cristopher Sanchez ranks 6th in NL with 2.96 ERA after allowing career-high 7 runs.
