THE JAWN STORE

A cloud began to settle over the Dodgers as the insult of 5 scoreless innings was accompanied by a particularly unfortunate injury: relief pitcher Brusdar Graterol, making his return from a shoulder injury, had to be helped off the field after injuring his hamstring. His replacement, Brent Honeywell, inherited a runner at first, then allowed a walk to Realmuto and a base hit to Nick Castellanos to extend the Phillies’ lead. Marsh then walked to load the bases for Edmundo Sosa, who slapped a bouncer towards a diving Freddy Freeman. Freeman was able to get his glove close enough to deflect the ball but not enough to stop it; the ball bounced into right as two runs scored, giving the Phillies a 4-0 lead.

Teoscar Hernández gave the Los Angeles nine a spark in the bottom 6th with a leadoff double, scoring on a groundout from Will Smith. They continued to build in the bottom 7th, finishing Sánchez’s night with a leadoff single and walk. But Matt Strahm did an admirable job of cleaning up the potential mess, putting the next three Dodgers, including Shohei Ohtani, out.

Hernández again provided some life to the Dodgers in the bottom of the 8th, smacking a dinger out to dead center and narrowing the deficit to 2.

But Hernández wasn’t the only one heating up: Sosa hit a high fly ball to right that just managed to stay fair for a homer. Kyle Schwarber, not to be outdone, immediately hit one to right that went even further and cut it even closer: it bounced off the foul pole on its way down. 6-2, Fightins.

There would be one more tremor: Andy Pages doubled with one out. But it didn’t register on the scale. The Phillies finished it off by inducing a foul pop from Ohtani, who ended his night 0 for 4.

The Phillies are 67-46, and have clinched the tiebreaker over the Dodgers by winning the season series. The rubber match is tomorrow at 10:10.

There was an earthquake in the middle of tonight’s game, a 5.3 on the Richter Scale that could be felt in Los Angeles. But that wasn’t what shook the Dodgers tonight. No, what left them rattled, off-kilter, and ultimately defeated was Cristopher Sánchez. And then aftershocks named Matt Strahm and Carlos Estévez . Forget the ground shaking; it’s the groundballs induced that you have to fear.

The Phillies looked a little lost in the first two innings, going down without recording a hit. Sánchez pulled his weight by keeping the Dodgers off the board in their first two frames, though he did allow two two-out hits. The Phillies finally put a baserunner on via a gentle bloop into right by Austin Hays, but a pair of fruitless at-bats and a caught stealing ensured that the Phillies left the 3rd inning still in search of something to hang their hats on.

They almost found it in the 4th. Trea Turner slipped a grounder through the left side of the infield and Bryce Harper slipped one through the right, but Alec Bohm struck out and J.T. Realmuto made light contact for an easy out. Meanwhile, Sánchez kept the Dodgers off balance and off the board.

Then, at long last, a breakthrough. Austin Hays doubled to left and Brandon Marsh took a hit by pitch, setting up a bloop RBI single from Kyle Schwarber. That ended Clayton Kershaw’s night and gave the Phillies the 1-0 lead.
