THE JAWN STORE

Nola followed with a two out walk to Marte before striking out Pederson to limit the damage despite already having thrown 45 pitches through two innings. He pitched his only clean inning in the third and allowed a pair of singles in the fourth, but they did not score.

Pederson led off the fifth with a single before Bell hit into a double play. Nola desperately needed a quick inning, but he then allowed a double to Gurriel and a home run to McCarthy that extended the Arizona lead to 4-1. Nola’s night was done after a strikeout of Suárez to end the fifth. His final line was 5 IP, 9 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts on 88 pitches.

White flag

Jose Ruiz pitched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts on in relief of Nola in the sixth before giving way to Yunior Marte who lasted just two outs. Arizona jumped all over Marte, as he allowed seven runs on six hits including two home runs. He exited with the score now 11-1 in a game that quickly turned into a blowout.

Silver lining

Max Lazar relieved Marte and made his Major League debut in the seventh inning. He retired Kevin Newman on a fly out to stop the barrage and then pitched a perfect eighth inning including a strikeout of Pederson.

The Phillies offense went 0-8 with runners in scoring position and Aaron Nola lasted just five innings in an 11-1 loss in Arizona. Philadelphia had numerous opportunities to score but couldn’t break through while Nola allowed four runs and two home runs. The Diamondbacks jumped all over Yunior Marte in the seventh to fully put the game out of reach. Jake McCarthy finished the day with a pair of home runs and 4 RBIs.

Missed chances

Things started quickly for the Phillies offense, as they had the bases loaded with one out following a Kyle Schwarber walk, a Bryce Harper infield single, and Alec Bohm reaching on an error in the first inning. But Brandon Marsh, who entered the game 0 for his last 15, struck out looking before Nick Castellanos grounded out on the first pitch to end the threat.

Later on in the third inning, the Phillies had another scoring opportunity, this time with first and third with two outs and Marsh once again at the plate. However, he would fly out to end the inning, bringing Philadelphia’s stranded runners total to five through three innings.

It took until the fifth inning for the Phillies to finally push a run across. Schwarber again led off with a walk before Trea Turner hit a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Harper brought Schwarber home and moved Turner, who was then the tying run, to third with a groundout.

Arizona starter Zac Gallen was injured on the play and was replaced by old nemesis Kevin Ginkel. Bohm struck out swinging against Ginkel in another failed opportunity to bring a run home from third with less than two outs for the Phillies. Marsh followed with a walk before Castellanos hit a first pitch line drive right at the third baseman to end the inning.

The Phillies couldn’t get anything going after that fifth inning, as they were held hitless for the rest of the game by the Diamondbacks bullpen. Their only baserunner was a Garrett Stubbs walk in the ninth.

Ice skating uphill

Aaron Nola struggled almost from the start, as Corbin Carroll hit a 111 MPH line drive right at Bryson Stott before Ketel Marte took Nola’s third pitch of the deep to right center for a home run and an Arizona lead. Nola then retired Joc Pederson before Josh Bell singled and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walked to put two on with two outs. However, Nola was able to escape further damage by getting Jake McCarthy to ground out to Stott.

Things didn’t go much better to start the second, as Nola allowed a leadoff single to Eugenio Suárez but received some assistance from Marsh in left who threw out Suárez trying to stretch it to a double. But Geraldo Perdomo hit a ground rule double and Jose Herrera walked to put two on with one out. Caroll grounded out to Turner and was going to beat out a double play regardless, but Harper dropped Turner’s throw to first and Perdomo came around to score to push the lead to 2-0.
