THE JAWN STORE

L.A. manager Dave Roberts elected to still leave Miller in, and he allowed another home run to Stott three batters later to push the lead to 9-0. It was Stott’s first home run since May 18th, and it traveled 432 feet before hitting off the Toyota sign in right center field.

Marsh would cap off his good night at the plate with a home run in the seventh to give the Phillies an even 10 runs. It was his 8th long ball of the year and just his second since the beginning of June.

The heat gets to all of us

Zack Wheeler was brilliant in his five innings of work. He set the tone early with a three-pitch strikeout of Shohei Ohtani on three fastballs to begin the game. His only blemish was a home run allowed to Cavan Biggio in the fifth on a full count with two outs. After that home run, Wheeler threw 8 straight balls to walk Ohtani and Will Smith. A visit from Caleb Cotham seemed to do the trick, as Wheeler was then able to retire Freeman to escape the jam.

He would not return however, as he was lifted after 76 pitches due to “lower back tightness.” His final line was 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. Wheeler’s next start is scheduled to be Sunday, the final day before the All-Star break.

Seranthony Dominguez, Gregory Soto, Orion Kerkering, and Jose Ruiz combined to throw four scoreless innings despite totaling five walks and four hits.

Tomorrow’s matchup

The Phillies will go for the series win behind Cristopher Sanchez (6-4, 2.96) against Gavin Stone (9-2, 3.03) for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 on ESPN.

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber made their returns to the Phillies lineup, but the bottom of the order and Trea Turner stole the show in a 10-1 win over the Dodgers. Turner blasted his sixth career grand slam and first since 2021 in the fourth and the 7-8-9 hitters went a combined 7-9 with 7 runs scored and 3 extra-base hits. Zack Wheeler pitched five strong innings before leaving after 76 pitches with lower back tightness.

Welcome back

It was an eventful first inning for the Phillies returning sluggers, as Schwarber hit a 98 MPH lineout on the first pitch of the game and Harper attempted to leg out a single on a ball that deflected off Freddie Freeman. Harper then had a ball deflect off of him in the top of the second before Bryson Stott made a spectacular barehanded grab and throw to a covering Wheeler. Harper had four balls hit to him defensively in the first two innings but all of them resulted in outs.

Bottom’s up

Brandon Marsh worked a two out walk in the second inning and then stole second base off of Dodgers starter Bobby Miller. Rafael Marchan then followed with a single to right to drive in Marsh for the first run of the game.

Johan Rojas followed with a deflected single before a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs. Schwarber followed with his second hard hit ball of the night, a single to right field that scored both runners and gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Schwarber was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double to end the inning.

The bottom of the order got it going again in the fourth. Marsh started with a single followed by a Marchan double and a Rojas high chopper that went over the third baseman’s head into left and scored a run. Rojas then stole second before Schwarber walked, loading the bases for Trea Turner. Curiously, the Dodgers had yet to have much bullpen activity despite Miller being on the ropes.

And Turner made his former team pay, launching a grand slam into left to break the game open and push the lead to 8-0.
