In a game where both teams were hoping for maybe 12-15 outs from their starter, you knew this game was going to come down to which bullpen blinked first. As a matchup between two of the better bullpens around, that prospect is exciting! The Guardians threatened in the sixth inning when a bloop single by Noel and a bloop double by Andres Gimenez with two outs against Orion Kerkering meant trouble, but a groundball to Alec Bohm ended that threat quickly. The Cleveland bullpen dominated the Phillies hitters when it was there turn, but in the seventh, the blink came when Jose Alvarado couldn’t get a fastball in enough on Steven Kwan.
How rare is that left on left home run allowed by Alvarado?
From there, the story of the game was the Cleveland bullpen performing against the Phillies lineup. There were chances: two men on in the eighth by a walk, only for Nick Castellanos to swing at the first pitch and fly out to right. But when Emmanuel Clase stepped on the mound and dominated the ninth, the game was over.
The Phillies will try and get out of their rut against the Yankees before hitting the road on a long road trip.
It’s usually on a beautiful day like this, we are grateful for all the ways in which you might take in this game.
Perhaps you’re inside, relaxing after a morning of finishing up those household chores.
Perhaps you have a TV outside on a deck or patio, enjoying the weather and game.
Perhaps you’re listening on a radio, enjoying a walk in a park.
However you decided to consume today’s game, it made you want to consume your shoe as the Phillies continued to run out a stagnant offense that relied on one man to get things done while the rest also enjoyed a nice Sunday off.
Having Kolby Allard make his season debut in place of Ranger Suarez, the Phillies knew they were going to have to back him up with some exciting offense and got off to thunderous start. Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a home run for the 1,000,000th time in his career as Joey Cantillo, the Guardians starter, made his major league debut in fine fashion.
Not satisfied with merely having a leadoff home run, Schwarber struck again in the third inning, this time with a runner on, which means a crooked number on the board!
All the while, Allard actually did just fine. Armed with a fastball that barely breaks the 90 miles per hour mark, he had to rely on guile to get through the Cleveland lineup the first time. He scattered a few hits, but nothing that was really all that hard hit. It was when he had to face the lineup again where had some issues, particularly in the fourth. Letting Jose Ramirez and David Fry on via singles was the prelude to an at bat where Jhonkensy Noel unleashed his David Ortiz impression and tied the game at three apeice.
