Off the court, McCain is an interesting person. When speaking to media after being selected, he mentioned being “joyful with life” in all he does. He was known for painting his fingernails — even getting an NIL deal with Sally Hansen — and for making TikTok videos. While McCain enjoys those extra curricular activities, he made it clear that basketball was his passion.

“I do the social media, the nail painting, I do all that stuff,” he said, “but basketball is my main focus and this has been my dream since I was 4 or 5 years old. So I’m going to do whatever I can just to win and bring a positive attitude and just have fun, man. I’m joyful with life and I try to bring that everywhere I go.”

The long-term fit with Tyrese Maxey is questionable, but Daryl Morey and company felt McCain was too talented to pass up. Looking back on Morey’s draft record, he’s always been more likely to take the best player available — regardless of age or fit.

While it might be a bit surprising that the Sixers chose to keep the pick, it appears the opportunities available in trades weren’t as good as simply taking McCain.

The Sixers hold pick No. 41 in the second round, which will take place Thursday.
